Camp LeJeune Water Contamination

In the 1980s, the Department of Defense uncovered drinking water contaminated with carcinogenic “volatile organic compounds“ at the U.S. Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune. Nearby industrial spills and waste disposal likely exposed service members (1) and families living on the base between August 1953 and December 1987. It was determined that nearby underground storage tanks, industrial spills, waste disposal sites, and an off-base dry-cleaning firm contributed to contaminated groundwater and waterways (6) near Camp Lejeune.
