Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer, and other Asbestos-Related Deaths by State

At the Madeksho Law Firm, our attorneys have assisted many victims of asbestos exposure in pursuing litigation against employers, product manufacturers, and other parties responsible for the asbestos-related illnesses and deaths. The statistics below cover the fatality rates of asbestos-related illnesses by state.

National Asbestos Death Statistics

According to government-sponsored studies, a conservative estimate puts the number of asbestos-related deaths in the United States at over 43,000 between 1979 and 2001. This is the number of deaths recorded in death certificate records for that period, and it is likely that many more such deaths were not reported.

For instance, this number fails to account for any deaths from asbestos-related lung cancer, which kills between 5,000 and 10,000 Americans annually. Additionally, mesothelioma has historically been under-diagnosed, and was not classified as an official cause of death for many years – resulting in severe under-reporting of mesothelioma-related cancer deaths.

This statistic also fails to account for a significant number of deaths linked to gastrointestinal cancers caused by asbestos. In all, including carefully calculated estimates to correct for these deficiencies, the number of asbestos-related deaths from mesothelioma, gastrointestinal and lung cancer, and all other causes may exceed 230,000 individuals between 1979 and 2001.

States with High Rates of Asbestos-Related Deaths

Predictably, asbestos-related deaths in the United States are rather concentrated in areas where mining, manufacturing, and product consumption have been heaviest. Though there have been individuals in every state  affected by mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other such illnesses, California is by far the most heavily affected. Estimates put the number of asbestos deaths in California between 40,000 and 60,000 since 1979. Florida is second with 3,000 to 4,500, New York is third with 2,500 to 4,000, Pennsylvania is fourth with between 3,000 and 3,900, and Texas is fifth with 2,600 to 3,600.

By contrast, the areas with the lowest incidence of asbestos-related mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other deaths are Alaska with about 50, Wyoming and the District of Columbia with about 80 each, and South Dakota and Vermont with about 100 each.
